Beer
in the 'burbs of Atlanta...
Alpharetta
and Cumming
are two rapidly growing suburbs just northeast of Atlanta along Georgia
highway 400. If you are a beer lover who lives in the Atlanta
area,
or is just visiting, you should make every effort to arrange a
designated
driver and head up to Alpharetta and Cumming to seek out two of
Georgia's
best brewpubs and one of Georgia's best beer bars...
Summits Wayside
Tavern
525 Lake Center
Parkway
Cumming, GA
770-886-4374
The beer taps at Summits (formerly Taco Mac) are truly
an inspiring
sight. The beer selection here is outstanding and possibly the
best
in the state. Every effort is made by the owners to insure that
every
beer available is often represented here. 5 oz. sample glasses
are
offered for a little over one dollar each -- this allows beer fans to
try
many different beers or have a taste before a full pint is
ordered.
The food at Summits is very tasty as well, with chicken wings, Mexican
items, and great sandwiches featured on the menu. Summits is also
loaded with televisions so patrons can be sure not to miss their
favorite
sporting events.

Directions to Summits:
Take GA 400 (US 19)
to Exit #14, which is the exit for GA Hwy 20. Go west on the exit and
continue
on to the second traffic light. This should be GA Hwy 9, so turn right
(north). Drive about another half mile and you'll be able to spot
Summits
on your right just past Beverage Depot. |
Buckhead
Brewery and Grill
872 Buford Highway
Cumming, GA
770-887-6070
Pictured to the right are Owen Ogletree (author of this
site) and
Bob Krusen (head brewer) standing in the gleaming Buckhead
brewroom.
Bob produces some really fine beers that include: Buckhead Light (all
malt,
nice light grain flavors), Redhills Amber (roasted and chocolate hints,
nice and malty), Panther Pale Ale (great balance of malt and hop
bitterness
from Cascade and Centennial hops), and Nut Brown Ale (slightly sweet
with
roasted nut flavors and hints of chocolate - mild and appealing).
Special and seasonal selections are also offered.
The interesting menu at Buckhead includes wonderful
appetizers, salads,
pastas, and grilled game dishes. The Cumming location also has a
pool room.
Buckhead Brewery has a new location coming at the end
of 2001 to
Alpharetta (a bit closer to the US Border brewpub). Check their
website
for details...

US Border
Brewery Cantina
12460 Crabapple
Road
Apharetta, GA
(770) 772-4400
NOTE: This brewpub stopped brewing in
2002, and the Atlanta area lost some of its best local beer.
These notes describe
how the brewpub was in 2001...
This brewpub opened its doors in November, 1995, making
it the first
brewpub to be built in the state of Georgia serving original Mexican,
Southwestern
and Tex-Mex cuisine. Designed and decorated in Adobe
architecture,
US Border has an attractive exterior and interior. The Mexican
food
is some of the very best available with imaginative menu items such as
Cabrito (roasted goat), Mesquite Grilled Shrimp and Poblano Chili
Rellenos.
Their Sun Salsa is a favorite in the area, and has become so popular it
is sold in jars to go. Live music is featured in the bar area of
the brewpub. |

Head brewer for US Border, Chris Terenzi, is very
talented at creating
some of the most flavorful beers in the Southeast:
TOMBSTONE GOLD - This golden ale is light, crisp and
clean with
little bitterness - a good introduction to craft-brewed beers.
MILTON COUNTY IPA - This IPA is dry hopped in the
serving
vessel for a huge hop flavor and bitterness combined with a solid malt
backbone.
OATMEAL STOUT - Ruby-black in color with almost a
coffeelike flavor.
Full bodied chewy beer.
CASK CONDITIONED ALE - Join US Border for "Firkin
Friday,"
biweekly, when they tap a firkin (11.25 gal. cask) and dispense a new
ale
using an authentic British beer engine. Availability is limited -
please ask your server. |
